To understand why our beloved cats scratch we first need to think about what their sharp claws are for. They do not intentionally scratch furniture to annoy us or to inflict damage. Actually cats have retractable claws in order for them to balance, turn, run, climb, jump and defend themselves with pin-point precision.

An alternative to declawing or re-homing your favorite friend is simply teaching them the house rules. There are a few simple techniques that are tried and tested to work in relation to this ongoing situation.

First, invest in numerous cat scratching posts or cat trees covered in either rope or carpet. Once you have got the posts or houses rub a bit of catnip on them to lure your kitty to them so they will know it is alright to investigate. You may even have to take their paw and do a scratching motion or scratch on it yourself to teach them how to use it. When they go back to the furniture, which at first they will, pick them up and take them back to the post.

Secondly, try double sided tape. It may sound wierd, but it does seem to work. Cats despise anything tacky on the pads of their feet. When they go to claw the furniture and feel the tape they will instinctively stop. However, you will need to replace the tape as it is pulled down from time to time.

A less likely option if both of the above fail is to utilize a small squirty gun filled with water. When your cat goes for the furniture, simply say ‘No’ in an authoritative voice and squirt them once on the butt with the water gun. Do not spray them in the face as it is very easy for a kitty to lose their breath for a second if this is done.

If done with consistency and authority your new scratching friend will soon be a non-scratcher in no time. The key is not giving up! It will not happen overnight, but it can be taught. Good Luck!

Pet care need not put too much undue pressure on you if you can trust your instincts and follow what your heart tells you to do.

Dog Training

If you are a stay at home mom or dad and you have an extra hand around, you have to teach your puppy for that specific function. Your dog is finding out on his own just by gazing and paying attention to you. If you’re exercising your puppy, you must get used to stretching your patience and putting a lid on your tension. Certain professional dog trainers are holding seminars, and you should attend these if you want to self-study the best way to maintain your dog while you’re working out him

Dogs have a similar ability to learn as humans, and the means they process information is the same, which means you can go all out in exercising your dog. You impulsively know the things he does to grab your attention; now it’s time to adopt that instinct and utilize it to effectively train your pet dogs. Describe your training objectives by generating a list of tasks for your dog to do. For starters, you should go for ‘obedience’ working out, and concentrate only on making your dog obey for now.

Pampering

A small present, like treats after a session, can inspire your puppy to try harder. You can begin with a nice, snug bed that he can make use of whenever he is tired from training. You can also get your pet a good bath set to make bathing more thrilling.

Another approach to pamper your pet is to get him toys. Because a dog doesn’t comprehend he’s coming up with a mess, and might not be in a position to perceive your anger or frustration in the start, make sure the devices you get him will keep him occupied so he doesn’t make a mess inside your home.

Competition Level

A number of pet dogs just have it in them to join high-status shows. Look for signs of talent and eagerness to participate in contests. If your puppy shows potential to excel, the best thing you can do is to permit him the opportunity to score some gold medals for you and himself through dog sports. Inborn talent and the eagerness to take part is something that certain pet dogs are just born with.

Improving Rapport Between You and Your Dog

It helps if you think of your pet dog as another person who just speaks another language and has different habits. Your role as the owner of a dog is to convey your feelings and accept the love that your dog can give you. You can live a happier and more productive life if you can get along with your puppy well. Go for trust exercises like doing competition together.

As Halloween approaches, you may wonder what to get your pooch attired in for the big event. With the selections available, you are sure to find exactly what you want.

To make less work for yourself, you will want a costume that is easy to put on your dog. Simple hook and loop fasteners do make it easy, but some are too long in the belly for male dogs. Considering this, tabs may be a better choice for your male dog.

It doesn’t matter if your dog weighs two pounds or two hundred, the only thing that matters is whether your dog likes to get dressed up. There are some dogs that you cannot persuade to dress and be cute. Others think it is just the thing to play dress up for the holiday.

If you have ever been to a doggie Halloween costume party you have probably seen costumes of every variety. The traditional to the most unlikely, all will be evident at these events. Every dachshund owner has the thought of dressing their pooch as a hot dog. It is cute, but common. Perhaps for something different you may decide to dress them up as hamburgers. Hamburger costumes are available and it will draw attention to your creativity.

Perhaps that 160 pound mastiff can go as a fairy princess. Now that would be an attention getter for sure. It all depends on the demeanor of your dog. If your dog is one that doesn’t like wearing a collar placed around the neck, it probably won’t want to be dressed in anything other than the collar when you take him out for a party.

Dogs do have feelings. Some like the revelry associated with dress-up parties and some do not. It depends on their tolerance. If they allow you to put a hat or a pair of sunglasses on them, this may be as far as they let you go. Others will allow the dress, but don’t want you to touch the head. You know your dog best and should judge your outfit on what is going to be most comfortable for your dog.

Little dogs can be just about anything you would like them to be and be cute. A dog that is easy to dress will probably strut their stuff when you get to the party. Boots and shoes may not go well on your dog. If you have ever seen the awkward gait that a dog with boots has, you will understand. It appears they are trying to step out of a mud puddle with each step. Perhaps you need to stop at the costume level.

If you are planning on hosting a Halloween party for your dogs and his friends, you may want to put a theme to it. Selecting fairy tales is always popular. The female dogs can come as Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland. The boys can come as Prince Charming or the mad hatter. Most of the other fairy tales have costumes available as well. From Little Red Riding Hood to Batman, someone has already thought of it.

A quick search on the internet will yield all of the fairy tale or other costumes that are available today. Pay attention to your prices and your shipping costs. There are times when you can visit a local pet store and possibly pay a little more, but come out ahead, due to the shipping. If you have a particular costume that you must have though, it may not be available at the local pet store.

Looking for a dog halloween costumes for your pooch this year. Check out our online dog boutique for all your dog gift giving needs.

If you own many dogs, it can be a headache when they start barking all at the same time. Anything could set them off – a truck’s loud engine, your neighbour’s cat, etc. The resulting group barking remains a problem your neighbour might complain about. If you’re the type who likes some quiet in the house, that’s a recurrent headache. How to stop dogs from barking? Here are some steps.

1. Spend time to observe your dogs. That way you get to see exactly what triggers their barking. Based on that, you can decide on what to do. This includes whether you can change your surroundings to move your dogs away from stimulus

2. Choose a bark collar One limitation of the outdoor remote trainer device is that when you walk your dogs, you can’t take the device with you. These installations are designed to stay fixed. The alternative is to use a no bark collar on each of your dogs.

3. The right size and type matters You might own several dogs and they might not all be on the same size range, so it pays to be meticulous and note down their sizes. Collars are available in small, medium, and large. The three types of deterrent systems to choose from are spray, static, and ultrasonic. Depending on the type a collar can let out a sound, a vibration, a low shock, or a scent.

4. Start spending time to train your dogs Do keep watch over your dogs when they’re wearing their new bark collars, to see how well they resond to them. Over time, increase the dogs’ collar wear time, so they get used to it. Note changes in their behaviour, whether they spend time trying to take off the collar, or if they’ve adapted to the intensity setting of the collar’s stimulus.

It can’t hurt to have a vet consulted on whether you’re doing your dog training correctly. It’s also a wise policy to not dispose of the instructions and read them carefully. Observe these steps closely to stop dogs from barking.
